It’s a Cover-Off

ECW Press, AKA coolest publisher on Planet Earth, is in the process of redesigning the Clare Vengel cover art. Starting with Dead Politician Society, they’re looking for a new concept to run with for the series, and they want as much input as possible. Does one of these covers grab you more than the others? All comments and feedback are welcome. Thanks for...

Dead Politician Society – Free Serial on Wattpad

Do not buy Dead Politician Society. If you already have a copy, keep it as a collector’s item but don’t read it. Not yet. Why? Soon the whole book will be free online at Wattpad. The first three chapters are up now: click to read. Chapter by chapter, I’ll be loading the story onto the online platform to give away to readers. The fun part: I’m going to edit as I go.   Why now? ECW Press got in touch a few weeks ago and asked if I’d be willing to give Wattpad a try. Since the Clare series now has three books in it, they figure that giving away the first novel free is a good way to engage readers and invite them into the series. (Like Rob Ford’s crack dealer…uh, I mean pot dealer…the first hit is free in the hope that you’ll soon be addicted.) I said sure. Wattpad is about authors and readers in conversation–like an ongoing online book club. That sounds like a lot of fun to me. BUT I asked if I could make a few changes to the text. Since Dead Politician Society’s release, I have had some really smart feedback from readers, bloggers and book clubs. I’ve also learned a thing or two about writing craft. So I wanted to take that advice and those new skills and apply them to the text. Nothing structural, no plot changes, and I’ll keep the fun, fast tempo. I want this to be the same book–but better. So I’m aiming for the same word count, just a bit more depth with each character, more...

Save Howe Sound: Game ON

As my friends and family may already know, I’ve recently been participating in a project called Save Howe Sound. It’s a community effort to preserve a gorgeous part of BC and stop a large-scale gravel mine from coming in and marring the recreational paradise (for humans) and the ecosystem (for salmon, eagles, whales, dolphins, elk, grizzlies and a whole lot more). At first, my motives were selfish. This mine will be in plain sight of my office window, and the channel where it’s proposed for is where my husband and I love to cut the motor on our boat and BBQ or dive in for a swim. But the more I learned about McNab Creek and the estuary where it meets Howe Sound, the more I opposed the mine for deeper reasons than the quality of my own life.   In a nutshell: BURNCO proposes to dig a 190-acre pit, mine for gravel and crush it and process it on site. In 20 years or so when they’re done with the land, they’ll leave a fake lake in its place. As corporations go, BURNCO has a good reputation for working with the land/water. They do a lot of work along the Bow River in Alberta, where the water is healthy and animal life is reputed to thrive. As locations go, they could not have chosen this particular site more poorly. Howe Sound is in a state of recovery. After a massive (and expensive tax dollar) cleanup following devastation caused by a copper mine at Britannia Beach, marine life is increasing in leaps and bounds each year. Salmon are plentiful...
